Pennsylvania Lake House is near completion

This modest, simple vacation cabin in rural northeastern PA is a project that I collaborated with New York Architect Terry Kleinberg on last year and is nearing completion. A paltry construction budget challenged us to resolve complex architectonic issues with "off the shelf" solutions. In doing so, we were able to not only meet the client's budgetary requirements but also deliver a zero energy, completely sustainable and affordable weekend retreat.

International Ideas Competition Entry

Vessel Studio recently expanded on its Brooklyn roots and is now located in Venice, CA. New design opportunities in California have prompted the expansion and we hope to grow our presence and position among other Architects and designers in the SoCal region.

Virtually bracketing both coasts, Vessel's exposure and broadening scope of services promises to challenge and fortify our development as a leading, sustainably driven design studio. In addition to this expansion, we have also added Design Consultation and Owner Representation to the list of professional services Vessel Studio offers.

Analog Design|Build Lab is created

New Home Renovation :: Avalon New Jersey

Vessel Studio has recently been commissioned to completely renovate the exterior of a single family residence in Avalon, New Jersey. This small renovation will transform the dwelling from a typical 2 story beach front property into an open, modern and ecologically responsive home through sensitive material selections and spatially dynamic sun and wind shading design solutions.

This small residential project is slated to begin construction in March to be completed by Memorial day 2010.

Design/Build Exploration :: Argentina

I recently returned from a visit to San Marcos Sierras, Cordoba in Argentina where I teamed up with Ben Uyeda from Zero Energy to design and build an architectural intervention in an otherwise untouched, rugged landscape by using and responding to the environment as our design laboratory.

Our goal was to visit the landscape, study the indigenous characteristics of the terrain and graft an "ordered nature" back into the abrasive surroundings. With a budget of $150 and approximately 4 days of construction time, we were able to explore various material combinations available to us, structural configurations based on those material choices and ultimately types of structures conducive to this particular site and its possible users.

The client plans on developing an Eco-Hostel on the 12+ acres in which there will be various pockets of dwellings linked through communal gathering spaces. Ben and I decided that we would design the link to these potential dwellings first, focusing on the passage as the archetype. The communal aspect was addressed by integrating a fire pit into the passage allowing the space to both function as a threshold as well as a destination.

Designer Pages Presentation

I have recently been invited to speak at the next Designer Pages presentation on November 19th to be held at the Duravit Showroom in New York. I will be presenting the work I have done with NY Projects, specifically the development and design strategy of the "Seoul Collection". If you would like to hear more from me regarding this work or the work of Vessel Studio, please stop by for the open bar and dynamic dialogues!

I have also just returned from a successful exhibition of the collection in Seoul where one of the pieces by Zaha Hadid was highlighted for the Seoul Design Olympiad, 2009. I am very excited to be a part of this endeavor with NY Projects as it promises to be a significant contribution of design-art and furniture pieces from some of the most notable and avant-garde architects and designers practicing today.

Keg N' Lantern Mural Design

Vessel Studio was recently commissioned to design a 10'x 50' graphic mural for opening of a new bar and grill in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This project was designed and produced under a very tight schedule and budget, both of which we successfully accomplished.

The design of the mural was inspired by the new owner's fascination with the production and history of beer. We layered in images , text and drawings from all era's in order to create an informational mosaic rich with texture, color and depth.

We have also been asked to complete the company's brand identity by designing their logo which will be seen on their website, menus, business cards and storefront.

NY Projects

Shawn has recently teamed up with NY Projects, an art & architecture advisory firm, as their Architectural Consultant and Design Director of Production. We are collaborating with Zaha Hadid, Ross Lovegrove, as well as other notable designers in the production of several industrial design projects to be unveiled within the upcoming year as well as several other potential international exhibitions and events.

Vessel+ is born

Vessel+, created to serve as the prosthetic extension to Vessel Studio, will be a datum between environments [social, economic, urban, natural, physical, virtual, etc...] and the work and research that may correspond.

Basically, this catalogue provides an ongoing glimpse into the direction and influences that create the process and may consist of mistakes, experiments, notions, and the like. With any process, response in all forms are welcomed and encouraged.
